Driver CPC Courses
Return to Driving CPC Course
The Driver CPC "Return to Driving" course is a new, specialized 7-hour training module designed for professional drivers whose Driver CPC qualification has recently expired. It allows them to get back on the road quickly without needing to complete the full 35 hours of periodic training upfront.
Requirements to Attend
To be eligible for the Return to Driving course, a driver's Driver Qualification Card (DQC) must have expired:
More than 60 days ago.
Less than two years ago.
If a driver's DQC has been expired for more than two years, they will need to complete the full 35 hours of periodic training to regain their qualification. This course is for drivers who intend to operate only in the UK; it does not qualify them for professional driving in the EU. A valid UK driving license is also required.
Syllabus Overview
The syllabus for the Return to Driving course is a condensed, targeted version of the full periodic training, focusing on critical areas where regulations and best practices have evolved. The course aims to refresh key knowledge and ensure a driver is safe and compliant upon their return. While the exact content can vary between providers, the core topics typically include:
Drivers' Hours and Tachograph Regulations: Updates and a refresher on EU and UK rules, including manual entries and proper use of digital tachographs.
Vehicle Maintenance and Walkaround Checks: A review of the DVSA's Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness and the importance of daily checks for both HGV and PCV vehicles.
Road Safety and Legal Compliance: New traffic laws, an overview of the Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS) system, and an emphasis on safe driving practices.
Vulnerable Road Users: Specific modules on how to interact safely with cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists.
Load Security and Safe Loading:For HGV drivers, this covers proper loading, securing goods, and the responsibilities related to preventing load shift.
Passenger Safety:For PCV drivers, this includes topics on passenger safety, disability awareness, and best practices for boarding and alighting.
The course is designed to be interactive and engaging, with some providers offering up to two hours of e-learning as part of the 7-hour module.
Upon successful completion of the course, a driver receives a one-year National Driver CPC card. To maintain their qualification beyond this period, they must complete an additional 28 hours of National or International Driver CPC training within that 12-month window.
